Early Sunday Morning, Parking Lot
Two Humvees pulled into the parking lot, followed by a moving van. The Humvees offloaded soldiers in fatigues, who stared blankly up the hill at the smoking wreckage of the school. After a long silence, their leader, a big blond man, said dryly, "Oh, so she's been here."
"I heard that, Drake," Yomiko informed him as she walked up. She picked a soldier at random and told him, "You there. Front and center." He presented himself, and she presented him with a heavy-duty steel lockbox. "Guard this with your life, you hear me?"
"What's in it, ma'am?"
Two books by Beethoven that could end the world. One book from the former vice-principal that had touched her dearly. She let her voice go icy as she told him, "I don't see how that's any business of yours, soldier."
"Yes, ma'am," he said quickly. "My apologies, ma'am."
"The rest of you, come with me. We've got a long day ahead of us." Even Yomiko was surprised at how quickly her basement had filled with new volumes.
"Any special instructions, ma'am?"
She thought about it for a moment, then told them the same thing they'd already been told twice: once by Drake on the way here, once by their CO before they left. "Be careful with my books."
